While a New York limousine hire company CEO has publically dissected what he believes are the hidden costs and implications of switching his limousine fleet to hybrids, is he just taking the easier way out by choosing to offset emissions through the Chicago Climate Exchange?

He claims that the $7,000 cost of a replacement batter for a hybrid limousine is impractical for his business. However, the hybrid batteries need replacement batteries very rarely and the taxi cabs in his own city of Manhattan are hybrid Ford Escapes and they have been shown to be able to withstand the tough treatment of that industry.

He also states that many passengers don’t actually want to give up the luxury of traditional limousines for the hybrid limousines and while this may be true for some customers, it is a sweeping statement to make. The CEO stated that he didn’t want a fleet of hybrid limousines which would sit in his garage unused and while they may not be as popular as a Hummer or Navigator limousine for a stag night, there are plenty of business meetings and airport transfers which would benefit from an efficient and environmentally friendly limousine.

Of course, in being bound to report your carbon emissions and pay monetarily towards environmentally friendly schemes to offset your use, you also have to trust that the funds are being appropriated, and the programs are effective.

While it may be easier to simply audit your carbon emissions at the end of each month and pay a nominal fee, it is a removed solution. Physically replacing high emissions limousines with hybrid alternatives is a tangible and very real, proven solution to the issue of climate change and while it may be hard to part with a Lincoln for a Toyota, there are many limousine passengers who will seek out hybrid transport.
